Voicing Pain and Suffering

Pure Research number sixteen was led by Mary Walsh at Glen Morris Studio at the University of Toronto in Toronto, on October 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, 2010.

Topic of research and goals: Explore a method to unfetter language – free it from the restraints that enslave it and make language nothing but a workhorse in the service of the other arts.

General inquiries: Can you stab people in the eyes with text, the way Francis Bacon does with his paintings?; Can an actor vocalize that level of pain and suffering, finding a way to ensure the words do not trivialize?

Participants:

Lead researcher: Mary Walsh.

Participating artists: Sean McCann, Susan Kent, and Lois Brown.

Nightswimming: Brian Quirt, and Rupal Shah.
